I wouldn't hesitate to put 2,000 pounds on the pin and haul it with the family in the cab. We would still be under all of our limits and the engine is more than up to that task (assuming a 10K gross fiver).
This was a 3,000 pound load right over the rear axle. That extra 1K over the axle makes a big difference. I wouldn't buy a 2500 gasser for a 15K fiver (3K pin weight), I'm just saying it can handle it with ease if it has to. I understand that much weight will cause it to break down eventually and I wouldn't travel long distances under that load.
