I know mechanics have to eat too but it wouldn't be on my dime.
Of course you're entitled to your opinion, and you're right, I didn't diagnose his problem as you certainly did not.
Getting back to my original question, why would you make the blanket statment, "he needs a new mechanic" when you admit you don't know the facts?
You essentially called that mechanic an rip-off or a liar (kind of the same thing) when you don't know the total situation.
Maybe you can fix everything under the sun, but many folks can't. These folks rely on good mechanics, and they're not cheap by any means. Good parts are not cheap. Good mechanics are not cheap.
