I tow 9300 lbs with a 2018 Ram 2500 6.4 and 4.10 gears. No way would I want to tow 12K dry (13-13.5K loaded) with my truck. If I lived in FL or TX then sure.
Any moderate hills will have the Hemi screaming for relief with 13K behind it.
I have no issue towing my 9300 lbs in Oregon mtns and hills. Adding 4,000 lbs more would definitely make things interesting.
Seeing as how your parents will be mostly on the flats then they should be okay. FYI my 18 2500 6.4 CC LB 4x4 Tradesman has 2970 lbs for payload.
