Well, if his regular drive cycle is the cause (it was for me on my work truck as well), then that's all the more reason to switch over to a gasser. The transmission is probably related. I munched my Aisin because carbon buildup in the turbo would occasionally cause an over-boost condition. The Aisin is robust, but not very smart. It basically only monitors TPS and speed, rather than load, so it doesn't shorten the shift times during over-boost. When my did it, you could feel the 1-2 shift overlapping. Only took about a week before it was un-drivable.
