I did it for about 3 years once. At the time, I had bought a TT on a whim because it was under market, did use it a few times, but my wife was working plus part time school at the time, so we just didn't have time to use it much. So I rented it for 3 years thru a local home-run business -- they rent out the RV's of others. I made some money at it for those years, but eventually had a couple of real bad eggs. One damaged the side backing up, so I kept his deposit, did everything correctly, sent him statement, pics, etc. So he sued me in small claims court. He lost, I won, but still, I endured the hassle. Then the straw that broke the camel's back -- a jerk super deluxe rented it, and was maybe the rudest most arrogant person I ever had the misfortune to deal with. So I bowed out and sold the TT. I sold it for only 10% less than I paid for it 3 yrs earlier. -- For me, it wasn't worth it to me to deal with people like that -- easier ways to make a few bucks, IMHO.
So, I'm your respondee who has been there, done that, made some money, but still, I would not recommend it to anyone. Now, 6 years later, we have an RV again, and have the time and do use it ourselves a LOT. And I wouldn't even consider renting it out.
And keep in mind, I was in the home and apartment rental business previously for 20 years, so I know the ropes of renting and leasing. I sold out of that because I got burned out on it -- renters would sign a lease saying anything, they didn't care, then thought they could do whatever they wanted -- in violation of the lease, but I then had to teach them otherwise. It was tiresome.
Curious follow up to the bad apple RV renter I mentioned. A couple of years later, the same dude was in the hospital for something, and on my wife's floor where she works!!! And BTW, we live in a large city. He didn't seem to recognize her fortunately, as he barely saw her when he rented the TT from me. But true to form, he was a royal deluxe PITA to the hospital staff. His wife and kids visited him, and my wife said they seemed kind of fearful of him -- rather said deal right there ... He was complaining about everything, so the hospital got so sick of him they brought the papers to him and told him to sign here and you can go home -- you don't have to stay here. Unfortunately for the hospital staff, he didn't go home, but it did tone down his antics just a wee bit for awhile.
