I could replace the motor for less than the repair the OP had and have money left over for tires and then some.
My whole 6.0 Chevy 3/4 ton cost 12,000 used with 23,000 miles on it.
Their is a place for Diesel. You start getting over 13,000 lbs loaded it is nice to have the power, but not the extra cost. I would imagine full timing or towing often it is nice too.
With my vintage 6.0 I don't know if I would lug around more than 9000 lbs, people do it, but it is what I am comfortable with.
The new ones with the 6 speed? Yep. The big three 3/4 ton and up gas trucks do a great job! My truck tows maybe 3000 miles a year, so it work fine for my 7500lbs loaded trailer.
