No, you don't "need" the power of a diesel, you may "want" that power, but it is NOT needed. It wasn't to many years back that the trucking industry was hauling 80,000# coast to coast with an engine that put out 190± HP and 420 ± torque, which is LESS than a modern gasser in a ¾t or 1t truck.
