Dunno what fumes you could be talking about being made sick by- a properly adjusted propane flame gives off mostly water and carbon DIoxide (same thing trees exhale).
If you're smelling raw propane when you're using an LPgas appliance, shut it down immediately and get it fixed before using it again!
