Wow was reading about the BMW 3.0 diesel and found this "they use turbo, twin-turbo, tri-turbo and quad-turbo on their Diesel engines" quad turbos!!!!! OK then.
Don
Only the M performance versions have more than two turbos. The regular cars like the N57 3.0L diesel in my old 335D was only a twin turbo. Tuning it I was able to push it over 300 hp and 500 lb-ft at the wheels. I would have needed more air than the stock turbos could supply to push it past that, but didn't want to spend the money to do it at the time.
My current 328d with a N47 2.0L diesel is only a single VG turbo even though it says "twin power" under the bonnet. I am only able to push it to about 240 hp and 380 lb-ft at the wheels before needing more air than the stock turbos can supply. Probably not going to spend the money to upgrade them either because I am happy with the 40+ mpg combined that it returns no matter how hard I drive it or if I do 80+ mph instead of 75 mph.
