Traditionally, the taxes that apply in your state are the one's you pay. For example, I live in Oregon (no sales tax) and recently bought my wife a car up in Washington and didn't have to pay the sales tax.
When I was shopping RVs in California I was told I still had to pay the sales tax there. A lot of folks swore up and down that was wrong but I think it was a new thing CA had done. I never ended up going through with the purchase so I'm not sure how it really all would have worked. I seem to remember there was some dog and pony show the dealer had worked out where he'd have a transporter meet me just across the border and perform the official transaction outside of the CA to avoid the tax.
