Anyone regret trading up

I currently have a 2006 Duramax Crew and am thinking about trading up for a new Duramax. I really like my current truck, but I feel it might be time to move on. Has anyone traded up and regretted it? I know once I sell my truck I won't be able to find another one like it. For those who have traded up, what are your experiences?

  • we put 125K on our 2004.5 duramax and then passed it on to our son. And we picked up a 2015.5 GMC 2500 denali duramax. same config, cc/sb/4x4.

All in all we love the 2015 Denali. lots of nice creature comfort and features that weren't in the 2004.5, gets better unloaded highway mileage by about 2mpg, same in town and towing.

Son now has 160K on the old 2004.5 and we put 28K on the new denali in the first year.

Don't regret trading up at all, would do it again, but the 04.5 certainly did everything we wanted it to do and probably will for another 150K miles or so.

But things kinda lined up. I liked the new 2015 improvements, son's S-10 he got from us had turned 270K miles and was starting to need work, and we figured if we got a new truck now, it would probably last us till we didn't need one anymore.

as far as emissions stuff and DEF, so far in 28K miles it's not been an issue. And with the GM a DEF tank lasts about 6K for us even towing half the time.
  • The Ram parts department guy near me said the emissions **** is they're biggest problem.
An 06 is not that old, if its working good.
  • It would be a 2500 for a 2500, but the improvements over the past 11 yrs seem to be pretty significant. Increased payload, better braking, integrated towing, etc. I guess it's the horror stories about all of the emissions junk that worries me.
  • Well,, if it helps,, I traded way up, from a half ton gas motor to a one ton diesel. Worked great for the family and towing. But the family grew up and started moving out so I went back to a Heavy Half (F150HD) then got a bigger trailer because I thought i had enough truck. I was right at the upper sweet spot of the F150, But it started wearing out fast so I am in a Sliverado 2500 HD gas 6.0 six speed long bed xtra cab 4x4! I am right where I need to be now and couldn't be more happy. My trailer is 6K loaded heavy and the 3/4 ton is perfect for what I need!!
Are you trading up? Or across? A Dmax for a Dmax is a Dmax. are you going 3/4 ton to one ton? I'd give my eye teeth for a Dmax but can't justify it!
  • For me, I traded up from a F150 to a F350 and regretted it within the first 50 miles. I'm back in a F150 now and am happy, happy, happy.

I suspect that since you are in a truck that you already like that upgrading to a newer version wouldn't have near the same experience I had.

I'd say do it if you are ready emotionally and financially. Especially if it's going to be a like truck for a like truck.

    Thanks!

Have never bought or traded into a new truck, I find the price well, revolting, even I were to planning to keep it many years. That said, I have a friend with an '06 2500 he purchased used and he absolutely loves it. Tricked out with stuff right down to the heated leather seats. I understand your reluctance to part with the 'known quantity'.
