anyone tow with a Volvo XC90?

My friend is buying a Forest River Rpod. They have a 2013 Volvo XC90 that is rated at
5000 lbs. They will be pulling about 3700 lbs loaded. Shouldn't be an issue but they are new to rving and his wife is concerned. Doe anyone have any experience towing with the Volvo?

  • I've seen an XC90 pulling a Airstream approx 28 ft long. They had a Hensley Hitch on it.
  • My in-laws have the same setup, and they blew their turbo charger two years ago. I drove the setup once, and the car would not upshift to the normal drive gear to pull the R-Pod on the flat at near highway speeds, not good in my book. They also have a fuel range of 100 miles per tankful.
  • Hey Mike,

Interesting you saw a Volvo/Rpod combo but it wasn't them. They haven't picked their trailer up yet. They'll feel better knowing there are other people with the same set up.
  • Pretty sure I saw them driving across the Golden Ears bridge on Saturday....I'm always checking out RV's as they drive by. ;)
First thought was, "Wow, a Volvo pulling an Rpod?"
As it got closer and passed by it looked like a solid set up. Trailer looked dead level behind it.

Think they should have no problem, but like any rig, caution is your best friend. Don't care if your a Volvo/Rpod or a 3500/40ft fifth.....take it easy and all will all be well. :)
As long as they don't expect to do the speed limit climbing up over the Coq, they will be fine. A cautious wife will most likely rub off on the driver....in my experience :)

Tell them to enjoy camping this season!

    Mike
  • A single axle TT especially a relatively aerodynamic one like the R-Pod should be great for the XC90, which is a mid-sized CUV.
  • I do know Volvos are one of the few cars left that actually have a tow rating
