As far as vehicle manufacturers are concerned 1/2 ton trucks are LIGHT DUTY ... and proof is in the pudding. My own '12 Silverado is pretty well topped out towing our 19' couple's trailer that measures a mere 22' 6" coupler to bumper, averages ~ 4800 lbs fully loaded & ready to camp, and typically runs ~ 625 lbs of gross tongue weight. My Silvy has a GVWR of 7000 lbs and the door sticker indicates it's payload capacity @ 1450 lbs, meaning it's curb weight should come in ~ 5550 lbs. However, to it I've added a bed liner and tonneau cover so when I put it on the scales with a full tank of gas, no one in the truck, it's actual weight comes in right at 5600 lbs, leaving 1400 lbs of payload capacity to account for the weight of everyone in the truck, all cargo I may add, PLUS any trailer tongue weight transferred to the truck. Subtract 625 lbs for that average tongue weight and that leaves me a mere 775 lbs for everything else and boy does that sure disappear quickly. :E

My own truck / trailer towing calculator ... read it and weep if you think you can tow an 8000 lb trailer with a typical 1/2 ton truck. This is so funny I could cry.
