Well I think one question was answered, the ARB would be the appropriate choice, comments here match up with what I have researched. Tough and instant on/off.
As far as drivability is concerned, I certainly don't want to compromise my ability to get out of a situation by fighting the steering wheel when the front is locked up.
I agree with Boatycall to the extent that you should be prepared if you venture far off pavement, but I don't feel I need to be prepared to the extent that a Jeep explorer would need. I carry a shovel/air compresssor/tow strap at this point in the event of getting stuck. Space and weight are at a premium.
I was most concerned with the application on a rig this heavy, but it sounds like it would work fine.
Is it worth the additional $1,500? Now that is the real question.
