We are also backpackers and have camped for multiple days/nights out of a backpack and slept in a two man tent. So you can imagine how a smaller trailer, like the 22G, would feel in terms of space when making such comparisons. I can see where the 22G may seem a little cramped if you are use to a lot of space. And for the price, it doesn't cost much more for a larger unit with slides. I'm not going to lie, our Jayco was a little cramped for us.

Back when we only "good weather" camped a small rig was fine. In good weather we usually only go in the RV to sleep.
As we lengthened our camping season we had to lengthen the rig. Now that we go on trips every month of the year, even when the forecast is for several inches of rain while we are out.
She likes a long walk in the rain, with the temp's in the low 40s, but when she gets back she wants a warm rig with a large cup of tea.
Me, I settle for a warm rig, a large cup of coco and a good movie on the DVD; while I listen to the rain and the wind.
