Not certain how things have "morphed" since we bought the 2012 (coming up on four years now!).
But the sleeper/sofa we have the cushions are not used for the bed, Rather Northwoods provided a (rather high-end) air mattress and inflator. Our guest have found the bed comfortable.
After a couple years we replaced the foam in the cushions for the sofa, they were just not holding up well and were becoming very uncomfortable.
The fabric was holding up well, just not the foam.
