Arctic Fox and surge protector

I thinking of installing a hard wired Progressive Industries EMS in my Arctic Fox 990. Has anyone done this? I'm wondering where there would be room for the install. Would rather not have the portable outside unit.

  • The stove removal may appear to be a big job, but it's just 8 sheet rock type screws, and the gas line. The stove is lightweight as well.
  • I installed one in my AF811, which looks pretty much like the 990 with the stove removed, except I don't have the wood enclosure for the power cord.

My cord is a marine style removable cord. It was tight working space, but I did mine without removing the stove. Mine is sitting under the stove.
  • I've done it on my 1140 AF. The panel to the left of the door to under the sink can be removed.
Pull the drawer above that panel to see inside and you should be able to deduce if there is enough room or not.

That panel is held in by staples.
I had to hammer (using a dead blow hammer) the front of the panel to push the staples out of the frame.
Of course that means placing a large wide block of plywood over the panel before hammering on it!

Using a pair of wire cutter (dikes) you can reach around behind the panel to pull the staples out.
Push the panel back to the front from behind if needed - that will leave the "heads" of the staple sticking up enough to grab them with dikes.

Later, you can reattach the panel with short screws and a specialty flat ratchet screw driver. (Remove all staples - be sure to remove any staples that pulled through the panel and remain in the frame.)

Hopefully, the 990 model is the same.
With the panel removed, you should be able to see the external power cord where it goes into a metal electrical junction box.
At that point, you should be able to fit the surge protector and improvise any mounting wood support for attaching the protector.

My apologies for not having photo'ed the install as I never thought anyone would attempt or need to do it!
  • So, if you removed your 30 Amp cord from where it is wound up in the box and put in a short connection to an outside weatherproof plug, would you have room inside that box for your unit? Then, when you want to use your electrical plug in you would just retrieve the cord and plug one end into the plug on the camper, and the other into shore power.

Some people that camp in the winter (I know you are so looking forward to that) say that it is better than trying to coil up a frozen stiff cable into that tiny box.
  • Thanks for the replies so far. Mounting in a trailer or motorhome is probably easier than a camper due to space limitations. I certainly do not want to remove my stove to install. Hmmm…may have to consider the portable unit.
  • I recently had my stove out as I did some TC rewiring, and there does seem to be some room to the left and right of the stove for mounting an EMS, plus the shore power line is right there and just terminates to a 10ga line. My TC is a 2005 990, but probably similar to your 2007.
