Arctic Fox Owners

I'm considering both AF and Adventurer for my first TC. I know AF's are great quality and heavy. I'm trying to avoid purchasing something that weighs a lot more than I thought. Were any of you were surprised to learn your AF weighed more than you thought prior to purchase?

Adventurer's web site has a build your own feature that gives you the price and weight of the base model and each individual option and totals it up. I understand they are very accurate with this. I have heard AF is known to often come in much heavier than customers may have thought so I'm trying to see if that is valid and something I should research more.

Thanks all

No, I wasn't surprised at all. Here are the numbers I used prior to purchasing based on research I did here after people actually weighed their rigs. There has been a lot of discussion about Arctic Fox weights, so there was a lot of it. I figure it is +- about 100 lbs. Accessories like A/C and solar panels weigh a lot, and it adds up. This assumes you have A/C and other common options like the Fox landing, and these are wet weights with full water, propane, and 2 batteries. This matched up very well with my experience with my AF 990:

    811: 4,480
    990: 4,700
    992: 4,800
    996: 4,980
    1150: 5,050
    1140: 5,150

I'll vouch for the 996 weight figure, pretty close to ours.

Ditto on the 1150. I had a 2012, mine was 5,280 reasonably loaded.
  • The weights listed in the previous posts confirm what I have heard. I'm not attacking AF as I know they make a great TC but as an example their website list the dry weight for the 1150 at 3358 lbs. That is a long ways form the 5250 lbs mentioned above. It's not a bad thing but it does make it more difficult for first time buyers who are not as knowledgeable as many of you to purchase the correct TC for their needs and more importantly for their truck. The heaviest dry weight they show is 3464 lbs for the 1140. I think they could do a much better job disclosing the fully optioned TC.
  • Butch50- Agreed-3600# is a joke (door sticker actually says 3526# wet), which is why I hit the scales on the first trip. Personally, I'm sure Northwood forgot to add each of the options you indicated.

I was younger and dumber then; the first pull & scale stop was my education, as noted by the 4600 lb ready-to-camp weight indicated previously.

While carrying the Caribou ready to camp, maintaining 55-60 MPH in 3rd was easy over Hwy 26 (Mt. Hood) or Hwy 58; with the 990, I was in second around half way up and was not able to hold 3rd again until the summit.

Would I change my choice in camper? Nope, but I am buying 19.5" wheels...

The last page of their brochure has a breakdown of how to calculate the aprox. wet weight. When I did mine it was reasonably close.

  • Over weight with my AF811 on my 2009 dually.

I suppose everyone probably gets tired of me posting these pics, LOL.

4120 lbs, before I loaded any gear in to it.

    Truck empty:

Truck with camper on it after picking it up from dealer, 2 full propane tanks, 2 batteries + about 1/2 tank of fresh water.

Yep, even on a 1 ton dually, I'm overweight!!

The truck in the background is an extended cab dually with a 990 on it. I'm sure he's even more overweight than I am.
