I'll go with the guys that say there is more btu's in diesel fuel vs gasoline, and that is the major factor in mpg's.
I believe the gas engines can match torque of diesels at the same low rpm. Ford's EcoBoost 3.5L and 2.7L gasser are already doing it. If they were diesels, they would get better mpg's because of the fuel choice though. Ram stands to do just that with their 1/2 ton 3.0L EcoDiesel.
I believe the Ford Boss engines and the new Ram 6.4L both already have oil squirters for cooling the piston bottoms. That means either could be easily modified to be turbo'd for the street without giving up much reliability.
Turbo'd engines of any fuel are more efficient than naturally aspirated counterparts. There have even been some piston vehicle cases where additional "free" propulsion power has been extracted directly from the turbo shaft. It's not really free, just unwasted heat energy.
