As I remember the 1967 L-88 427 was at 12.5:1 and even that was border line for the gas they had then and is why many were run on aviation fuel.

It is because it must be injected (sprayed in) before TDC of compression which means it's in air (oxygen) before compression is at max. Therefore, at a 16*1 ratio it would already ignite from the heat of the high compression. Flash point would be instant AS the fuel was spraying in even below a 16*1 ratio. I'll see if I can find a link to the charts displaying temperature degrees at sea level at 70 F ambient air at 50% humidity. I'm about 1250 miles from the specific engineering manuals presently.
