Are slides safe to use in the closed position?

Having just replaced a flush floor slide I can attest that there is nothing supporting the inner edge when retracted. That said there are those who carry wood supports that they wedge under the unsupported inner edge to allow use.
As far as in my case the kitchen slide and bed slide can be used in open or closed positions.
