The Ford does have a significantly larger cooling system than Ram, as well, the Ford is a little more fuel efficient (more of the fuel's energy is being harnessed to do usable work which puts a little less demand on the cooling system) so it should outperform the Cummins on a hot day. It would be interesting to see.
I know my 15's cooling system is not as large as the newer RAM's but towing 35k up long 6% grades in 90 degree weather nothing ever gets close to being hot.
It would be interesting to see all three towing on HOT days for sure.
The coolant capacity of the ‘21 Ram is very similar to that of your ‘15 …. about 22 quarts. Are you aware of anything in particular that Ram has changed, as far as the cooling system goes, in the new trucks?
Are you basing the size of the cooling system on the amount of coolant? The amount of coolant is only one part size of the radiator plays big part in in cooling. Do you have information on radiator sizes for the Ford and Ram? I know our 2016 doesn’t get hot even towing above 100 degrees.
I don’t know the size of the 2020 Ram radiator core but 2013-2018 was 26.75 x 22 inches and the 2015 Ram has a coolant capacity of 22.8 quarts. The 2020 Ram has a coolant capacity of 22 quarts.
The 2020 Ford has two cooling systems. The primary system has a cooling capacity of 32 quarts. The primary radiator has a core size of 27.75” x 38.38”. The primary radiator is responsible for engine coolant, engine oil cooler and the EGR. The secondary system looks after the aftercooler, transmission cooler, and fuel cooler.
The Ford stacks their radiators one behind the other and utilizes a high capacity fan in order to draw through an adequate amount of air.
I’ve heard people say that towing very heavy up long steep grades on a hot day will cause the Powerstroke to derate but I’ve never experienced it.
Well that is a big radiator, and a lot of coolant, but how many rows of tubes in the core, the PS also has two banks cylinders the Cummins only one.
