It all depends on where you want the engine to make its power. Yes the gasser has more peak HP and could get up the hill quicker but the turbo diesel will make much more power than the normally aspirated gasser in lower RPM ranges. Other than fuel economy, I think that is the biggest thing diesels have going for them when it comes to towing.
