I also have a Wolf Creek albeit it is an 816 model. I don't see any evidence of a splice if I understand what you are referring to.
He was using both Happijac tie downs and turnbuckles. Northwood specifically recommends using Torklift frame-mounted tie downs. In this case that would've helped with the rear tie down but not with the front.
