Okay, I think I figured out why my Wolf Creek 850 camper front tie downs are installed differently and why my camper doesn't have any splicing like the OP's. My Wolf Creek 850 is a short bed model with side boxes, so no splicing is needed to get the additional length required to reach 8.5 ft. It appears from the responses received thus far from Arctic Fox and Wolf Creek owners that the splicing is found only on long bed versions of their truck campers.
Like I said earlier, I've driven through some pretty intense wind in Northern AZ in my WC 850 and have encountered no issues or damage with my tie downs. Mine have been rock solid.
