Just the plywood
YIKE!!!!!!!!!!
Plywood is a beautiful product when used in the design parameters of the intended uses. Plywood, much like Cardboard has exceptional strength when force/weight is placed onto the vertical grains (on edge), but loses it's suface strength when applied across it's horizontal grains.
So in relationship to the weights involved, not considering the forces amplified when in dynamic mode (bouncing), is like attaching your tie downs to the bottom side of a cardboard box. Even if you were to move the attaching bracket to the vertical side of the cardboard box, you would have more holding strength.
Now a cross webbing can be designed for support, but it takes more thickness than what this thread's photos indicate. Sure you have a seam, but there is even a bigger problem than just the seam.
I would love to see what engineer signed off on this design parameter. But I am sure they are going by the statutes of limitation on design defect. Now knowing what the results were and ignoring an inherent unsafe condition, that is a cat of a different color. Or was it a horse?
