It's funny. I think the very reason NW requires the Torklift system is to remove the forward angled force of the Happijac. The very force that keeps the camper forward in arguably the most important restraint of the translations described by the above article. No forward angle because it will peel apart the plywood seam.
I found the study helpful, if not just a little too wordy and maybe over-simplified. I was especially glad toward the end to see it described the issues (a little) about bed flex and the all important tie-down methods ON THE CAMPER ITSELF.
Two things are obvious to me. 1-The tie-downs need to be snug enough to hold the camper from movement, but loose enough to prevent truck bed or camper structure destruction caused by flex and/or force. 2-Camper attachment must be located in a position that not only allows proper angle of turnbuckles but correct attachment to camper structure (solid plywood vertical surfaces - be they side or front/back walls). Wings won't cut it alone.
As I replace rotted wood on the lower side walls and wings of my 1968 Travel Queen, I am evaluating it's tie-down method. Thanks for this thread - it is helping me conclude I will have a very strong method when I'm done.
