I'm an Aussie, but live in the US.
I assume you'll be spending time in the Rockies? Our family just got back from Yellow Stone & The Tetons and I lost count of how many times I crossed the Continental Divide. In other words, lots of mountain passes at high altitude (6-10,000ft)
Non-turbo petrol engines loose power to the tune of 3% per 1,000ft. I'll let you do the math, but the mountains are the place you really need all your engine's power. Turbo Diesel's are the way to go, or at least one of Fords ecco boost gas engine's (v6 turbo).
America is one beautiful country. The national parks and RV infrastructure is amazing, and everything is so much cheaper. The hardest part of your trip will be going back home to Oz. :B
