I assume you'll be spending time in the Rockies? Our family just got back from Yellow Stone & The Tetons and I lost count of how many times I crossed the Continental Divide. In other words, lots of mountain passes at high altitude (6-10,000ft)
Non-turbo petrol engines loose power to the tune of 3% per 1,000ft. I'll let you do the math, but the mountains are the place you really need all your engine's power. Turbo Diesel's are the way to go, or at least one of Fords ecco boost gas engine's (v6 turbo).
America is one beautiful country. The national parks and RV infrastructure is amazing, and everything is so much cheaper. The hardest part of your trip will be going back home to Oz. :B
G'day, there seems to be a lot of us Aussies living in US that frequent this forum, which is great. My wife & I have been before, we cycle toured the West coast & across Canada so we got to ride the Rockies, they are big mothers. It's such a diverse & beautiful country, we can't wait. I was going to get a Turbo diesel, I really like the look of the Dodge Ram 3500 megacab (for the kids) with Cummings motor & so does my wife which is a bonus. :) next choice is Chev, have never been a Ford man for whatever reason.
