The new Euro 6 emission standard that comes into effect this year is much closer to the Tier 2 Bin 5 standard that is in use here, so fuel standards should also be much closer. This bodes well for more diesels being available in North America. There is no way Euro 5 engines would have qualified for sale here. Because of that, VW stopped producing diesels for the North American market for the 2007 and 2008 model years until they could come up with a couple of new engines.
