Awning Arm Question

We have a manual retractable awning on our TT. My question: what is a good rule of thumb about when to disconnect the swing arms from the bottom of the camper and put them on the ground like regular "poles" or leave them attached? Just got back from our sixth trip this season and while I was sitting around relaxing I looked at my awning and started thinking about it.
