axle rating vs GVWR

The specs for a 2019 Lance 1575 says that the axle (single) is rated for 2530 pounds, The GVWR for the trailer says 3700 pounds. If I understand correctly you should not exceed the axle rating. What am I missing?

Simply, you're missing the weight that is on the tongue.

Tongue weight was my first thought as well. But that would be an 1,170 lb tongue weight on a 20 foot long single axle trailer. That's about a 30 percent tongue weight. To the OP. The numbers really don't add up. I would call Lance directly and ask them.

You are mixing up different numbers. I checked Lances website:

    Ratings:
    GVWR = 3700
GAWR = Not Listed on their website but probably 3500lb as they won't make a custom axle for a travel trailer. You get the GVWR when you add the hitch weight.

Empty Weights as it comes from the dealer:
    Unloaded Axle Weight = 2530
    Unloaded Hitch Weight = 245
    Unloaded Total Weight = 2775 (2530+245)
So you have 925lb of cargo capacity before hitting the GVWR

Of course this is all per the design calculations, so it might be off by a bit in real life.

carefull, it may have a 3500lb axle but still could have a lower axle weight rating driven by the tire capacity. Rating will be the lower of either the axle or tire capacity.
  • Fooling with numbers to make a single axle trailer seem safe, adequate for your needs.

Add water, batteries, propane and your stuff you’ll be over max TT weight.
  • Thanks for looking it up Valhalla. Sure beats guessing.

    TW.
Though it is not normal for the difference to be that high. It is likely a misprint, and the axle is likely the common 3500# that most TTs get.
I would contact Lance for clarification.
