Backup camera location ?

Just bought a two camera system for Truck and trailer.

Never had a backup camera except the occasional rental car.

I'm considering locations.

The scenario is backing into a tight camp site late after a long day when a lot of things went wrong, that's when you make a mistake.

Should
i put it on the roof? I worry more about trees than anything else. WIll i lose too much ground visibility? In the middle? Down on the bumper?

THanks

  • No, it's not about the the method of mounting, it was more about the location. I'm just considering scenarios.

Where do the RV makers put them?

I am more likely to clean off the roof air on a tree than i am to back into something.

Yeah, the 50 year old Revcon sits in the yard. Our post-pandemic escape plan called something easier to manage. We got an Excursion and a Shamrock.

so, i'm guessing the Shamrock doesn't have the camera prep, since you're asking about different locations for the camera.
my 2016 TT didn't have the camera prep so i used took out the rear center clearance light and used the hole and the wiring to mount and power my wireless rear observation camera.
my system has a 7" monitor and we just got back from a 2 month 3000+ mile trip and the system worked great.
i didn't hookup the backup wire since i wanted the camera on all the time, not just for backing up.
  • Hard to find an Excursion in SoCal in decent condition. Last built in 2005?

I'm confused. You posted this in the Hybrid forum, yet your signature shows a class A Revcon Motorhome. :h

What trailer are you talking about? Which camera system are you talking about?
Sounds like the trailer has no camera prep.
  • My trailer has a slot for Furion back up camera. But Furion is pricey.

I bought a cheaper one and placed it on that Furion slot with some mods.

It is sited near the roof.

There is a logic for that for the wider view, like when you are driving, but I have to have it focused downward so I'll have a perspective of the back of my trailer seeing it's backside and the center that I marked with small American flag. Works like a charm even for a newbie in maneuvering trailer like me.

I put mine about 3/4 of the way up the back. Mine had had markers to let you know how many feet you could back up (lines).
