I needed a way to monitor my kayak trailer while towing it. Sounds similar to your needs.
I mounted my Swift Hitch camera on the roof ladder and wired its power cord into my porch light. When I am towing the kayak trailer, I turn on the porch light switch and the camera is powered from the 12V camper system instead of its internal battery. The camera is adjusted so it sees the trailer and not headlights from vehicles behind me.
This setup works great for me. Maybe it will for you too.
