Backup Cameras

Does anyone use Backup cameras for their Trailers? I have been looking at a semi inexpensive camera so that it would make it a little easier to see what is going on behind when I am without a 2nd person to stand behind. I just wanted to know best mounting locations (Roof, Bumper, Rear wall), any suggested brands that wont break bank. I have a Rear cam on my TV but that doesnt do me any good.
  • One came with my new Denali and I've found it to be more of a toy. The image is skewed so you don't get good depth perception. Would never trust it to back into a tight space.
  • I use a pair of wired backup cameras (both license plate frame cameras) feeding a Kenwood DDX393 double DIN DVD receiver in my Tahoe dash. One camera is mounted to the back of the Tahoe facing the hitch area, and one is mounted to the back of the trailer at about typical rearview mirror height. The wiring is simply zip tied to the trailer frame and I have a set of RCA connectors I mounted behind the bumper so I can disconnect the trailer. The camera has no problem transmitting over 40 feet of cable back to the dashboard, and the image quality is very good.

    Here's the camera I use:

It's a bit of a wide angle compared to your eye so you have to get used to the depth perception, but it also has servicable night vision so I don't need backup lights to get into my driveway or a spot, and I can easily hitch up without having to check where the hitch is going to stop. It is also really, really nice to have a trailer rearview camera while driving in heavy traffic... last time I drove through Seattle on I5 it was a breeze. I don't really need my extended towing mirrors any more, I don't have a blind spot to the back.
  • :) Hi, I bought a Garmin RV 760 GPS with back up camera. I recently installed it, (the camera) but haven't towed with it yet. I like the idea that I can share the GPS screen for the back up camera.
  • Garmin RV 760 LMT with camera. I ran two power points under my rear bumper. One is for when I'm not hooked up to the trailer. This is wired to my back up lights. The other is wired to an Upfitter switch.
I also ran an extension cable under my trailer to the back bumper.

This way I can just use my quick release power connections and swap it out to the upfitter switch. I can flip the switch and see behind the trailer whenever I want to. Just turn the switch off and it goes back to GPS.

The camera is on a small clip that I move from the truck plate to the trailer bumper where I installed a mounting point.

Works great and takes only about 45 seconds to swap out camera and power connections.

The transmitter is ziptied under the rear bumper and I get great reception.

Anyone know of a reliable wireless backup camera?

The Swift Hitch SH02 Wireless Camera System works well for me. I especially like the all metal camera and the fact the camera / transmitter and the monitor are each self powered and therefore require no wiring at all to the tow vehicle. :B
  • I have an I BALL that I attach with a large suction cup to the rear of the TT when the need arises.Works great.
  • I installed a cheap camera on the rear of my trialer & ran shielded cable underneath to the front where I installed an inexpensive transmitter with the receiver and a monitor in the truck. Works great cost less than $200 total. Pulled power for camera & transmitter off riding lights, so I have to drive with my parking lights on.
  • This is the one I got:

I bought it solely for a 2 week vacation, and am giving it to my parents as a thank-you for letting me borrow the trailer.

When I get my own trailer, I'll likely install a wired unit and tie it into my existing truck screen (GM lockpick allows additional camera feeds to the OEM display). It'll reduce some clutter and I'll have a good quality screen.
  • back in 2011 I installed a wired camera onto the back of my trailer.

Still working well, in fact I transplanted the head end into my new tow vehicle. Here is the link to the original post.
    Wired CCTV installation

I also have a camera on the back of the Avalanche that give me an excellent view of the hitch for hooking up.
