Backup Cameras

Does anyone use Backup cameras for their Trailers? I have been looking at a semi inexpensive camera so that it would make it a little easier to see what is going on behind when I am without a 2nd person to stand behind. I just wanted to know best mounting locations (Roof, Bumper, Rear wall), any suggested brands that wont break bank. I have a Rear cam on my TV but that doesnt do me any good.

  • What model of you don't mind me asking.the one im looking at is 59.99.
  • Bought one on amazon for $80-ish.
Wasn't 100% reliable, but for the money it was *great*.
  • Wired backup camera with a 7" screen in the TV. Used for backing up and monitoring traffic behind me for safer lane changes. Camera is near the bumper.

Here's a pic of my mounting arrangement. The cable is zip-tied under the TT and terminates with a connector at the tongue. The cable from the monitor is wired to a jack near the 7-pin connector. When I connect the TT cable, I connect the camera at the same time.

  • I have a wired back-up camera mounted high by the 3 center marker lamps on my travel trailer. I have it aimed down so that I can see both ends of my bumper to prevent me from backing into something. I do not use it to see traffic behind me. It is powered from the marker light circuit so that it is off unless I turn on the lights. Thus I have control of that from my pickup without having to wire a power switch for the camera into the truck.
  • I have read about the Wireless lag issue and was really just looking at the wired ones. The other think is that I maybe getting an amazon trial to review for a backup camera so I guess if its free then that will make it worth it lol.
  • not sure if you're considering it, but I've heard some of the wireless cameras have crappy signal and range, so might not work well especially on a longer TT. For backing up I always have DW with me. I would probably use it more for seeing traffic behind me especially as assurance when changing lanes, but really don't see it being all that worthwhile.

Boy, in my case that's the first thing I would disable! :W

FWIW, our previous KZ Spree had a window on the rear cargo door so I mounted a wireless camera inside the trailer, pointed out through the window. Seemed like a great idea at the time but ultimately proved worthless as the image was so fisheye it was hard to determine just how far behind other traffic was or when backing into a campsite how far back that tree or rock may be. It didn't handle contrast well so any view that contained bright and dark areas was very difficult to discern exactly what was what. I use a Swift Hitch SH02 for hitching up and find it invaluable for that purpose but otherwise I wouldn't waste the $$$ trying to see what's behind the trailer.
  • We have one we bought through Camping World. The camera is on whenever your truck lights are on, so you can see what's behind you at all times. Ours has a screen that attaches to the windshield, and has a microphone so I can hear my wife giving verbal directions when backing. I wouldn't leave home without it.
  • I have a Furrion on my travel trailer and I must admit, I don't use it much for backing anymore. The screen is pretty small and the image isn't crystal clear. It was a novelty item when I first got it but I use it more checking for traffic behind me than backing. Looking back, I wouldn't spend $400 again.
