Hi! Just looking for a bit of advice. My husband went to get our camper out of storage in our friends barn. We have done this numerous times. This time as we had to go wider than usual to avoid another camper he snagged the roof on a garage door track. This ripped up a piece of the vinyl(?) roof. To fix you need to replace the entire thing which was estimated at $6000. They sell a special seam tape. Do we tape it or go through our insurance? We plan to trade this trailer in next year. So bummed!!!!! Anyone else have something like this happen?

Doubt its vinyl, its likely EPDM rubber or some other compound of rubber. First I would determine exactly what material it is.Eternabond tape is great, but it only covers the tear. If you have a EPDM rubber roof, I would encourage you to research a product called "liquid roof". This is a liquid rubber (like a thick paint) that you brush on to your roof. It is the same chemical compound as your existing roof and adheres to the original roof and creates a seamless repair. I used this to fix a hole in my roof years ago. Cost about $60 for a quart (I think) and took about an hour to prep, mix, paint of and clean up. It is a one piece roof membrane again.Good luck, make sure to keep it dry before you fix it. Make sure to clean the section very well before you fix it. The cleaner it is, the better and longer lasting your fix will be.

Eternabond is indeed good stuff. But be very careful to make sure you follow the directions on cleaning and prepping the place you put it. If it sticks right, it sticks forever; but if it gets dirt, soap, etc. left under it when you apply, it'll leak and then peel right off, and you won't be happy.

Thanks for the confidence that it may work. Yes, I am not sure the exact roof material, but I knew you would know what I was talking about. It is a 2012 starcraft hybrid. I am all for doing the tape for our use, but my concern is how will that effect the trade in? I was hoping to sell it on my own. We have kept it immaculate and always stored indoors. So disappointed.

the next buyer will want to have a good repair job so to get max money for it do it right. what does your insurance say?

Just get a rubber roof repair kit. It will have a butyl backed piece of rubber roof material. Stick it over the damaged area and seal the edges with lap sealant. The repair will last as long as the original roof.

Give your insurance agent a call and have it appraised. If you do not like the results just don't make the claim. A torn roof will definitely have an impact on the value of the unit, especially if it is not repaired correctly. I say the insurance route is worth a try. Sorry it happened to you. I know the sinking feeling you probably have in you belly. Good luck

It would depend on the value of your RV and how much the damage and repair effect it cosmetically. It the tape will look terrible and it's an otherwise nice RV that you take a lot of pride in then I would turn it in to my ins.

Since it is rubber I will look into the liquid roof. The only problem is it cut to the edge of the roof and has dented the trim a tiny bit.
