One is the inexpensive Harbor Freight maintainer. Just disconnect the shore power from the maintainer and notice the led is still lit..

Been using HF maintainers for over 20 years. As you noted, they do need supervising and they do die occasionally, that is why for 6 months I do only battery clamps pull.
But in those years only once the maintainer went high-wire and boiled my battery at 16v.
So once again, the only foolproof mode is disconnecting battery clamp.
Coming to OP issue - it takes a lot to blow 30 amp fuse and I don't like when thighs stop acting with no explanation. Did you use jacks in that period?
