Travel trailers use the single 12volt battery mounted on the tongue to power the breakaway switch and activate the brakes. As has been said the battery needs to be there in case the trailer becomes completely disconnected from the truck. At that point you have just unleashed a 6,000 pound unguided missile across the interstate and possibly into oncoming traffic and you're going to want it to stop as quickly as possible.
