Axle ratio isn't going to make a huge difference. For instance when the Ford is running full out at 2900 rpm in 3rd gear with 4.30 rear gears the Chevy would be traveling exactly the same speed in second gear at 3000 rpm with 3.73 gears. So the Ford got the benefit of using one extra gear to get rolling. Not a big deal on a 4 mile race.
