One will also find that the motor type depends upon the engine bay too. Locomotives use a V motor, trucks, some boats I motors are better. Even the pancake motor has a place, as do vertical vs horizontal vs circular piston motors for some applications!
One can make short or long strokes depending upon the which setup works best for what application also.
Reality is, can I get the best motor for the job persay! with the drive train to do the job I need to do!
