Scott, yes I have seen the videos. They do show how things should go but.....
You have to grab the can, hopefully it is not in a pack. Then you have to aim the can in the right direction, pray there is no wind and spray the bear in his face in a second. At no further than 15' away. A bear can charge at 30 miles per hour or more. Hopefully you have not panicked and did everything according to directions. If the spray does not make direct contact to his face chances are he won't stop. We were told never to spray if a bear is not charging. It could irritate him and then he will charge and your spray is gone. Also, any residual spray on clothing gear etc will actually attract bears. Ironic!
Lets face it, the chances of a bear attack is rare. Rare, but not to be discounted. Bears are not interested in humans unless it is a predatory bear.
A lot of people don't realize that bears are only one of a few animals that can harm you.
Scott, a firearm might work as long as you had time. Here in Canada though, we don't carry a gun camping unless you are a hunter.
I would not want people to miss out on such beautiful countries we live in, full of wildlife in their natural habitat for us to watch and learn from, because of fear of bear, elk, moose or wolf attacks.
