Best A/T tire and size for TC?

I have an '07 Dodge Cummins 3500 SRW and tow a trailer as well as carry a camper. I have rear airbags and no levelling kit.

I've got 285/70/17 Toyo Open Country A/T right now and need new tires. I'm contemplating between various E rated A/Ts but was wondering which brand A/T people recommend and which tire size when it comes to towing.

Is wider better or taller to avoid side wall tire flex and good gas mileage? I hate the look of small tires on a truck so the lowest I will go is 285/70 but am also contemplating 305/70 Nitto TG or 305/65 Pro-Comp Xtreme A/T on stock rims.

Thanks for any advice,
Raz

  • I run Vision Heavy Hauler 81 rims rated at 4500 lbs each and Dynatrac PD890 tires rated at 4805 lbs each.
  • 295/70/17 Toyo MT's are 4000lbs capacity each. What wheels do you have? Wheel width might be an issue if running stock rims. American Racing has some 17" x 9" wheels at 3800lbs each.
  • 245/70R19.5 would be slightly taller and skinnier than your current tires. They would handle your loads and respond better.
  • I have Nitto Terra Grappler in 285/70R17 that are rated at 3750@80 PSI and they are a great A/T tire. Lots of sidewall support with my 4,000 lb. camper load. The only negative is that the tread tends to pick up gravel to a greater degree than other A/T tires like the Wranglers that I have used on my trucks and SUV's.

You do need to check the width of your truck rims and look for a tire that has that width within its recommended wheel width range.
  • IM now a truck camper guy but use the same tires towing various trailers.
I run 265/16 tires , but these tires are avl. in your size.
I have run Bridgestone REVO 2's
    Cooper AT/3 's
Both were VG tires. The Revo's made more road noise but the wear was about the same.
I have no complaints with the Cooper AT/3's, very quiet , good in all kinds of road surfaces and weather conditions. They were great in the snow/ice.

Michelin LTX/T2 is also a good tire in your size. I have NOT used them, but were recommended to me by the tire shop as an equal to the Coopers.

I went with Cooper because i always had good luck with them and they worked so well, i seldom had to use 4x4.

You look here to check 'specs/reviews' rebates are avl .
