The GVWR which is important. But no one seems to factor in the RAWR. You need to weigh you TV loaded with your gear, full tank of fuel,passengers just as if you were heading out. Weigh both front and rear axles.
Consult the sticker on your door jamb to see your max. RAWR. Subtract your actual rear axle as weighed from the RAWR to see what amount of weight that can be added. This amount includes, tongue weight, and the weight of your distribution hitch.
Can you tow more than what the rear axle is rated for? Of coarse. Safely, maybe. It's your call.
I can't imagine why anyone wants to push the limit on GVWR. Know what your tow vehicle is rated for and get the TT that will meet those limits. Wireman
