Speaking of hwy 38, west of Sawyer's it squeezes between the river and high rock cliffs (beautiful with vegetation).
There are a few pullouts in cliff-clefts where one could safely boondock. Or, at the beginning and end of the cliffs, there are roads up into the state-owned forest. Supposed to be some old growth up there, and nice camping; I regret not making time to check it out when I was in the area.
