Oh, I gotz another one for youse! The Carrizo Plain. Officially, you can only boondock in the mountains (which are GORGEOUS in spring), but I have unofficially done it along the main (gravel) road. Or the campgrounds are nice, small, and free.
Hwy 58, west of there is
beautiful and east is breathtaking. Plenty of boondocky pullouts, some huge.
Bonus if you have a cat: The grasslands are a rodent paradise :). My kitty stayed out till 2am in freezing temps and when he came in he was SO happy, and so not-hungry.
He even brought one for me. I didn't eat it, though I am pretty sure I would prefer an organic, free-range, herb-stuffed mouse to a can of cat food :B
