There was an interesting point made about the differences between diesel specific motor oil and high performance engine motor oil. I don't know how much weight to give his findings since anybody can put anything on "paper" and call it research, but certainly sounds reasonable.

Ah, you caught that! Yes, interesting indeed.

And also agreed, the whole this is overkill for daily drivers, but may be not so much those who intend to keep their vehicle 200-400k miles.

Its possible that picking a better performing oil off this list for the same cost or less than you're paying today becomes a win-win.

And there some equally interesting some points regarding 5w-30 oils greatly out performing common diesel grades like 5w-40 and 10w-40. While at the same time, may be not enough to suggest switching if your current results are doing just fine.

Regardless of the report/blog, I still rely on UOA's to tell me what I'm doing and choosing is working out well. There will always be a dozen or more fine options at any given grade oil, but one could perform slightly better than another when analyzed after being run in your specific engine and conditions.

  • but in all honestly I think it's a bit overkill for a daily driver.

LOL....yeah after 20 min of reading it still didn't tell me anything.
The author needs to condense his findings.
However I'm old school and will continue to use what lubes my engines likes best and 200k-400k miles of trouble free service. And no I'm not brand loyal....lots of excellent engine oils out here.

I've been reading about various oils for over 25 years and have never shared a web site or document other than my own UOA's until today, when I came across this web site. WOW! It's a long read...various test results begin eventually.

We've made use of the 540 rat blog for our endurance race car, but in all honestly I think it's a bit overkill for a daily driver.

Works now. A mod seems to have fixed it. Thanks!
