Surge Guard is JUNK. Had a spike get past my Surge Guard and nearly sent the camper on fire. Only reason I knew we hit a surge was the burning smell and our fan started running at double speed. Good thing were there as I flew out and yanked out the power. The surge actually burn up, with flames, a secondary surge guard that saved our electronics.

Called surge guard about the problem and got ZERO help and ZERO responses to emails. There is a reason they only give 1 year warranty, substandard protection.

Hi deltabravo, when my generator starts up it has no effect on my display. I think it stays blank but does not need to be turned off.

I have the hard wired 30A progressive. I just realized this after a year but the slide switch on the display not only turns the flashing display off, it seems to bypass some of the circuitry.Last time out I was just plugged into a 20amp house circuit and had the switch off. All was well. When I turned the switch on ,I got errors and cut power to my TT. With 150' cord I would imagine there would be low voltage but all we were using were lights, fridge and water pump. So the switch can also bypass the unit when you really don't want the protection. I am guessing this will not bypass the unit if it malfunctions.

I have had a surge guard, hard wired for about 6 years, no issues, but since I bought it, I have concluded progressive has a better product. However any protector is better than no protector. I RV mainly in Mexico where power is really unreliable, but the thing did save me from a bad pedestal in the US once as well.

You have a good point. For someone unwilling to install a hard-wired unit themselves, a portable unit would be the way to go. I wouldn't want to pay someone to install it or have a huge inconvenience if it was destroyed and needed to be bypassed. It would take me a few minutes to bypass it but I do have 30+ years of electrical background and am comfortable doing it.
Camp-On...

I have the Progressive 30 amp EMS portable unit. I always lock it to the power post and so far have never left the campground without it but there's always that possibility. I'm sure you would be happy with either the hard wired unit or portable. They both work very well.

I guess I spent too many years in the electrical industry and have seen way too many devices of all types that were hit with power surges or lightning strikes. Some of the devices suffered non-passive failure. I would rather this type of failure be outside not inside my RV. YMMV

But I am a big believer in my PT50C and absolutely will never plug in anywhere without it. I'm such a fan I actually have two. One that I have been using for the past 5+ years (full time) and a spare still in the box. Well worth the peace of mind for me.
