As far as bears go, consider bear spray. Legal and also very effective against big meat eaters. NP where Grizzlies roam says better than a gun as a deterrent.
As far as who's tire experience is the best, I'll leave that one mostly alone although Moab isn't representative of everything offroad. But, I guess you know that, right? :) My guess is the people who've been to Alaska are going to provide better info for tires for those roads.
