I agree with intheburbs, our 2010 Burb is a towing machine........the ONLY reason we have an Excursion is because I'm a diesel fanatic. My wife loves the Burb, I just wanted a diesel to tow with....!
3/4 SUV is the only way to go IMHO. We vacationed in our '08 Ram 3500 CTD when there was only 6 of us and it was not comfortable at all. You might be different but it gets tight having a kid at my elbow for long stretches of driving......
We have 7 in our crew and I'm a 4wd guy, we love to hit back roads once we get to where we're going and a van just wasn't going to do what we wanted.
1/2 ton SUV, regardless of tow rating doesn't have the GVWR and spare cargo capacity to handle a big family, any gear that goes IN the vehicle AND the tongue weight of most trailers that are big enough to comfortably camp in. We have already been there, tried that and have a 3/4 ton Burb because of it.
